Hey Terry,
I would recommend Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow (read both!)
I also read Black Beauty when I was younger. Have you read Lord of the Flies? That made a big impression on me as well.

There will definitely be more Harry Potter books. Maybe not soon and maybe not even by J. K. Rowling but if you look at any billion dollar franchise it never really goes away. I would expect some new movies, a TV show, a cartoon, some spin-off novels, a few comic books, and other stuff sometime down the line.

I’m about half way through now. It’s much better than I thought it would be. I thought Frankenstein (‘s Monster) just walked around saying “aaaahhh” “aaaahhhh!”
