I’m behind the reading schedule but now I’m finally in the most interesting part, so far. The creature is regaling the story of the cottagers to Frankenstein. It’s fascinating because it explains a lot about the psyche and motivations of the monster. I enjoy seeing the world through his eyes, especially as he is trying to figure out the moods and language of the cottagers. However, it does seem a bit farfetched how he learned language so quickly, thoroughly and in such a sophisticated manner; if that were true, I think my teaching experiences might be a big different (or maybe I should try a new method and force all my students to live in hovels near cottages of Americans for a semester!). Anyway, I am now happily engrossed in the novel (it sure took a while) and am reading quickly with a hope to finish the book by the end of the week.
I agree – this was my favorite part. I enjoyed the monster’s point of view more than Victor’s. Perhaps in addition to super physical abilities, the monster’s brain has a bigger capacity for learning? To me, it’s a little too convenient to the story that he picked up language so easily and could therefor relate his story to Victor.
